How can the heart of Huddersfield be reimagined for its communities?
Our Cultural Heart is a major council‑led scheme. It’s focused on creating a more vibrant and resilient Huddersfield town centre. Covering 7.8 acres, the project will bring together a new food hall, library hub, museum and art gallery, urban park and public square.
Designed around people, the project aims to revitalise Huddersfield’s town centre and visitor economy. It will strengthen community connections and enhance everyday experiences across the town. This reflects the needs, values and identity of Huddersfield’s communities.

Delivering a new cultural chapter for Huddersfield
We were appointed by Kirklees Council as the Strategic Development Partner to provide a multi-discipline service across the first and second phases of the project, including project management and cost and commercial management expertise. Working as part of the on‑site team, we’re fully embedded within the programme, collaborating closely with stakeholders and enabling informed responses as the project evolves.
Our early involvement allowed us to support key public consultation and research, ensuring feedback from local residents shaped the developing design. Parts of the scheme involve Grade II Listed buildings, including guiding. The careful planning and design considerations will protect important heritage assets while enabling the wider regeneration vision.
By integrating core project functions, such as risk management, change control and design management, we’re providing a clear and consistent view of progress against agreed baselines.
Through real-time reporting and insight from our digital Hive Portal, we’re supporting quicker, better informed decision-making and giving the client confidence in the direction of the programme.
A space for everyone
The Our Cultural Heart programme is designed to create a more vibrant, inclusive and socially connected town centre. The masterplan brings together cultural, leisure and community spaces that encourage people to spend time in the town and engage with one another.
The vision highlights areas for leisure and relaxation, alongside spaces that support creativity, performance and discovery. Family-friendly zones and playful areas within the urban park will encourage people of all ages to use the space, while flexible areas ensure there’s always something new to experience.
Together, these elements create an accessible and welcoming destination that strengthens community life.
The programme aligns with wider regional investments, such as the TransPennine Route Upgrade, improving rail connectivity to and from Huddersfield. During RIBA Stage 3, we completed key work to improve accessibility. We redesigned existing levels to provide inclusive access to key parts of the scheme.
