Madrid-Barajas International Airport is undergoing a major transformation and expansion plan. With a capital investment of over €2.76bn, the major expansion programme is transforming Spain's busiest airport into a highly connected and sustainable global hub airport.

What does a modern aviation hub need to support growing passenger demand?

The expansion focuses on Terminal 4 (T4) and its satellite terminal (T4S) alongside aircraft aprons, parking, utilities and other support infrastructure. Aena’s goal is to increase the airport’s capacity and consolidate its position as a main hub connecting Europe, Latin America and Asia. Aena is developing an airport city that includes logistics facilities, hotels and new offices. The vision also integrates a high-speed train and an additional metro line to improve passenger connectivity.

Guiding strategy and technical delivery through a sustainable lens

We're acting as the technical assistance project manager (ATPM) for Aena. Our team is overseeing the design, construction, cost and risk management across the programme, including the BIM methodology in all the expansion plans involved. We established an integrated governance structure through follow-up committees to improve coordination across all departments. By consolidating design information and evaluating multiple alternatives, we’re helping Aena make clear and cost-effective decisions. Our early technical studies have already optimised accessibility configurations, effective management strategies on parking areas and improved terminal functional layouts for passenger flows.

Aena’s development strategy integrates an ambitious decarbonisation strategy: to enhance passenger experience, while also protecting the environment. They are building an extensive solar park on the site to reduce dependence on carbon-based energy sources. The project is pursuing BREEAM certification for its terminal buildings and WELL certification to ensure employee well-being. These efforts directly support Aena's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 and maintaining its high carbon accreditation level.
