Connecting Ireland to mainland Europe with EirGrid
Ireland is transforming its electricity system to meet its climate ambition. By creating a direct energy link to mainland Europe, the Celtic Interconnector will enable the exchange of 700 MW of electricity between Ireland and France. This will make an important contribution to shoring up Ireland's security of electricity supply, while supporting the growth of renewable power.

Project overview
What are the benefits of building a direct energy link to France?
The Celtic Interconnector is a major cross-border project, developed through a joint venture between EirGrid and the French transmission system operator, Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE). It requires the installation of 500km of high voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable, with an additional installation of high voltage alternating current (HVAC) land cable from the network connection points to the converter stations in both countries.
Once complete, the connection will enable European consumers to benefit from a more open electricity market. The project will help Ireland achieve its climate objectives and put downward pressure on the cost of electricity.
Project capital value

Supporting a strategic capital programme with national significance
We’ve provided project, contract and commercial management support since the development phase of the project began in January 2020. By embedding our experts directly within EirGrid’s organisation, we’ve collaborated closely with them to navigate the technical constraints of this major infrastructure project. Using our global expertise to support the delivery of onshore cables, offshore cables and converter stations, our team has also developed detailed contingency plans for high-risk aspects of the work to ensure the project continues to progress at pace and mitigations are put in place as required.
Delivering benefits for local communities
The €1.6bn interconnector is a vital step in helping Ireland become a net exporter of renewable energy. Alongside its environmental contribution, the project is generating significant social and economic value. A community benefit fund has already awarded over €1.6m to support local initiatives in the project area in east Cork. The construction phase is also supporting employment, with the primary civil works contractor bringing around 200 workers on the project at peak times.
