Laying the foundations for Wolverhampton’s Green Innovation Corridor with the City of Wolverhampton
Six Mile Green is a flagship regeneration project for the City of Wolverhampton, designed to unlock development‑ready land and support the growth of green technologies and innovation.

Project overview
How can we create a sustainable project in a complex landscape?
Located within Wolverhampton’s emerging Green Innovation Corridor (GIC), Six Mile Green sits next to the University of Wolverhampton Science Park and key transport infrastructure. Recognised by the West Midlands Combined Authority as a strategic development location, the site has the potential to accommodate new laboratories, offices and light manufacturing space for sustainability focused businesses.
City of Wolverhampton Council and University of Wolverhampton needed a clear, deliverable strategy to progress the site while aligning with funders’ requirements and long-term regeneration objectives. Working closely with the council and university, we helped to derisk the site, secure funding and achieve planning consent for Phase 1, setting the project up for long-term success.

due to our commercial and environmental advice
A one-team approach
We provided an end-to-end solution for Phase 1, combining project management, development management, cost and commercial management and procurement and supply chain expertise. Working as an extension of the council’s team, we helped coordinate stakeholders and align technical, commercial and funding requirements.
Alongside securing planning permission, we supported the council and university in shaping a robust development and procurement strategy. Advising on the most appropriate route to market, we designed an enabling works package that aligned with funding and commercial objectives.
We led the development of a full business case for submission to the West Midlands Combined Authority. Providing technical evidence, cost certainty and economic benefits, the business case was successfully approved, unlocking nearly £7m of funding to support delivery of the enabling works to make the site safe, accessible and ready for construction of Phase 2.
Unlocking future growth and opportunity
By embedding within the council offices, we helped streamline communication and maintain transparency across organisations. We also supported wider stakeholder engagement, including hosting a public consultation event to help build understanding and support for the proposals.
Our commercial and environmental advice helped the council achieve savings on biodiversity net gain requirements, protecting scheme viability while meeting planning obligations.
With planning secured, funding in place and a clear strategy established, Six Mile Green is ready to move forward into Phase 2, focused on delivering enabling works and bringing the sites to market. These sites are key to unlocking investment and development within the amibitious Green Innovation Corridor (GIC), which holds West Midlands Investment Zone status.
A foundation for long-term impact
As a beacon within Wolverhampton’s GIC, Six Mile Green sets a benchmark for future regeneration projects across the region. By combining careful planning, strong commercial advice and collaborative delivery, Phase 1 has created a platform for sustainable growth, supporting jobs, innovation and investment for years to come.
“The Turner & Townsend team delivered an excellent service for the Wolverhampton Green Innovation Corridor (GIC) specifically for the WM Investment Zone funded project, which centred on four unused sites close to the University of Wolverhampton Science Park.
“The team provided a lead co-ordination role and oversight of a variety of inputs and services culminating in the approval of a full business case via the West Midlands Combined Authority and approval of a hybrid planning application, securing outline permission for the sites and detailed planning permission for the required remediation works.
“We’re extremely grateful for the professionalism of the team and of course the successful outcome of the work”
