Rehabilitating the iconic Centre Block with the Canadian Government

Iconic national landmark Centre Block serves as Canada’s Parliament and is a classified heritage building. It was reconstructed between 1916 and 1927 after a devastating fire destroyed the original building, and now work is underway to improve the existing facilities.

New facilities

The Centre Block is the largest heritage rehabilitation programme ever undertaken in Canada. It has been recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI) as a globally-influential project, ranking first in Canada, and seventh overall for North America. The scope of the redevelopment programme for Centre Block includes new mechanical, electrical and security systems, the restoration of heritage spaces, and new parliamentary office suites and broadcast-capable committee rooms, as well as the construction of an underground visitor welcome centre complex.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) is responsible to the Canadian government and the Canadian people for a timely, cost-efficient delivery of the programme. The project is part of the federal government’s long-term vision and plan for the wider Parliamentary Precinct.

Comprehensive approach

We were appointed by PSPC as its cost-time-risk consultant to provide oversight and integration of the design, construction and programme costs, and schedule of the multiple projects included in this programme. Our team is also providing integrated risk management to drive a successful outcome.

Rich history

Centre Block is at the very heart of Canada’s political and cultural landscape. It represents the rich history of the country, as well as its contemporary hopes and dreams. As the institutional home of Canada’s system of parliamentary democracy, it embodies the achievements and challenges of a bilingual, pluralistic society. Its setting, within the landscape of Parliament Hill, serves as a reminder of the powerful intersection of history and geography that define Canada’s identity.

The Centre Block Rehabilitation Programme will deliver the complete restoration and modernisation of the Centre Block to ensure it can support modern parliamentary operations and welcome increasing numbers of Canadians for another century.
