Delivering Antarctica’s sustainable research hub with the British Antarctic Survey
We provided digital solutions to help the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) transform operations and facilities at Rothera Research Station.

Project overview
How do you reimagine polar research facilities for the long term?
The Discovery Building was commissioned by BAS to replace ageing facilities at Rothera Research Station and create a modern, integrated hub for science, logistics and operations. Located in one of the world’s most remote and challenging environments, the 4,500m² space unites several buildings. It forms a single operational facility that improves collaboration, safety and staff wellbeing.
This was the largest UK construction project ever undertaken in Antarctica. The Discovery Building gave BAS a modern hub for polar science, logistics and operations, ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of polar research.

Providing certainty in a complex environment
Delivering construction in the Antarctic presented unique challenges. Extreme weather, short construction seasons, complex logistics and global supply chain pressures demanded robust commercial oversight and clear decision-making. Working as part of the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP) Technical Adviser team alongside key partners Ramboll UK and BAM UK & Ireland, we provided cost management and commercial advisory services throughout the project lifecycle, helping BAS maintain financial control while navigating the complexities of a remote construction programme.
A key part of our role was the deployment of our proprietary Cost Control platform and Hive Portal. Together, these digital solutions provided a single source of true project costs, risk and change information, giving stakeholders access to real-time data and performance insights. This ultimately supported effective governance despite the geographical separation of the project team and the remote Antarctic operating environment.
Enabling a sustainable legacy for science
Today, the facility is the operational heart of Rothera Research Station. It provides critical life-support infrastructure including power generation, communications, logistics and field expedition support. Beyond improving operational resilience, the project establishes a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in extreme environments. It has achieved the first BREEAM Outstanding accreditation in Antarctica and is expected to contribute to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions at Rothera Research Station.
Incorporating technology such as combined heat and power generators, an intelligent building management system and more than 80 solar panels, its innovative design and delivery have received significant industry recognition, including a special mention at the Architizer A+Awards 2026, and being shortlisted for four British Construction & Infrastructure Awards.
