Delivering the Celtic Interconnector with EirGrid
The Celtic Interconnector is a planned subsea link to allow the exchange of electricity between Ireland and France. It will enable energy to be drawn to maintain power demand when the main grid is under pressure, moving electricity around more efficiently to the places that need it.

Project overview
Multi-jurisdictional working
Since 2011, electric power transmission operator EirGrid has been working with Réseau de Transport d’Electricité (RTE) to find the best way to develop the subsea interconnector to benefit electricity customers and markets in Ireland, France and the wider European Union.
As well as promoting renewable energy by exporting excess energy to avoid wastage, it will also reduce the cost of electricity for consumers.
Project STORY
Supporting delivery
We have been working with EirGrid since 2020 to support the programme, collaborating across countries to provide services in programme and project management as well as procurement, including commercial management and tender evaluation.
In late 2022, the project reached a significant milestone, achieving final investment approval.
Later the same month, French President Emmanuel Macron and Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced an EU grant for the project, which has been recognised as a Project of Common Interest for the bloc.
Integrating the market
Once built, the Celtic Interconnector will allow 700 megawatts of electricity to move between the countries, equal to supplying power to around 450,000 homes.
Working towards a fully-integrated energy market will help the EU to achieve its energy policy and climate objectives of affordable, secure and sustainable energy for all people, promote renewable energy, and improve the export of electricity.
