Enhanching passenger experience with Schiphol Airport
The €1.4bn A-Pier programme is transforming Schiphol Airport – enhancing passenger experience and reducing the airport’s environmental footprint.

Project overview
How do you create a sustainable future for Schiphol?
Schiphol is a major European transport hub and a gateway to the Netherlands. The Amsterdam airport has launched a ten-year capital investment programme to improve passenger experience and reduce its environmental footprint.
The central pillar of this €1.4bn investment is the new A-Pier. This 55,000m2 facility provides eight new gates, three of which can accommodate the largest aircraft.
The project gives Schiphol the capacity it needs to manage peak passenger flows. It also upgrades existing infrastructure across the airport site.

Adding value as a trusted delivery partner
We’ve partnered with Schiphol since 2012, initially providing cost expertise before expanding our role to include programme management office (PMO) advisory services.
Our integrated team delivers construction cost control, contract management, risk management and project scheduling. We combine local market knowledge with global aviation best practice.
We conducted a review of the capital programme in 2019. We then developed a successful operating model when we took on the role acting as Schiphol’s central reporting function. We provided one source of truth and created all reports for the airport’s boards and committees.
Driving sustainability at Schiphol
The A-Pier is crucial to Schiphol’s long-term ambition to become a more sustainable aviation hub. By providing the space needed to facilitate passengers during the upgrade of older facilities, the new pier allows the airport to modernise its wider infrastructure and operations.
This project supports the long-term goal of reducing the airport's environmental impact. It also helps keep the airport a premium international destination. The investment ensures Schiphol can manage future demand responsibly, creating a better experience for passengers, airlines and the local community in Amsterdam.
“We have had excellent support in establishing our project budget and with the systematic management of risk allowances. As our projects are designed, procured and delivered, Schiphol will benefit from having the capability of Turner & Townsend available as our adviser on all commercial aspects of the project.”
