Client's requirements

V&A Dundee is the focal project of the Dundee Waterfront Regeneration, one of the largest regeneration schemes in the UK. This ambitious 30-year project reconnects the city with the river and integrates the area for the economic and social benefit of all local residents.

Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, V&A Dundee tells a global story, with permanent Scottish Design Galleries, major exhibitions showcasing the very best in international design and a lively programme of commissions, events, talks and workshops.

The award-winning building houses permanent Scottish Design Galleries and flexible exhibition gallery specifically engineered to house regularly changing travelling exhibitions from around the world, making it the largest standard temporary exhibition space Scotland. There are other spaces dedicated to learning and outreach, as well as a residency studio for designers to showcase their design processes.

The project was a high-profile collaboration between both Dundee universities, Scottish Enterprise, Dundee Council and the V&A museum in London, who together founded a new charity to run the museum.

An international architectural competition for the design of an iconic new building was won by Japanese firm Kengo Kuma & Associates.

Our contribution

This structurally challenging building, which cantilevers over of the bank of the Tay river estuary, required careful project management. We provided a dedicated project manager to lead the building design process, lead contractor procurement, administer the construction contract and manage stakeholder and funder engagement. The role was expanded to manage the installation of the exhibitions, and fit-out throughout.

Making the difference

The award-winning V&A Dundee, Scotland’s first design museum and the first V&A outside London, was created to exhibit the brilliance of Scottish creativity and the best of global design. The ambitious 30-year building project reconnects the city with the river and integrates the area for the economic and social benefit of all local residents.

The project was delivered on time and on budget. Opening its doors in September 2018, the gallery welcomed half a million visitors in the first six months – twice as quickly as it had expected.
