Awarded highest accolade in Singapore’s Total Defence Awards

Each year, MINDEF, Singapore’s defence ministry, recognises businesses that have displayed outstanding support to Total Defence - Singapore’s whole-of-society national defence concept, based on the premise that every aspect of society contributes to the collective defence of the state.

Introduced in 1984, the Total Defence Awards recognise businesses, particularly employers and civil resource owners, for their outstanding contributions to the city-state’s security.

The awards consist of the NS Advocate Award across four categories. This year, 148 NS Advocate Awards were presented to 15 large companies, 83 SMEs, 37 organisations and 13 individuals.

Khoo Sze Boon, Managing Director, Singapore, Vietnam and Philippines, said:

"It is an honour to receive this prestigious recognition at a national level as a business. By achieving this award, it demonstrates our strong support and commitment for National Service and Total Defence, which is the cornerstone for the country’s peace and stability, enabling our economy to grow and propel forward.”

We will continue our advocacy journey to support our employees, for those who are active Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) and also their spouses or family members who are serving, and collaborate with the wider community to drive this meaningful cause.

Sze Boon is an active NSmen (Operationally Ready National Servicemen) undertaking his national service and holds the rank of Major (NS). In 2020, he was selected to attend the Command and Staff Course (National Service) - the pinnacle course for NSmen spanning nine months with a five-week residential phase.

Singapore’s Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, addressing the awards ceremony, said every Singaporean had an important part to play in Singapore's national defence. Dr Ng said:

The freedom and way of life that Singaporeans enjoy are never a given, and must be protected at all times. It doesn't matter how high the skyscrapers, how deep the bonds we have formed between people – all that is lost if we cannot protect the country.

The awards, originally planned for 2021, were postponed as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions in Singapore.
