press release
Turner & Townsend, the global professional services company, has been appointed to provide cost and commercial management and contract administrator services for South Canterbury development, a major new extension to the city of Canterbury.
South Canterbury, in Kent, is a significant masterplanned scheme on the southern edge of the city that will deliver a new, sustainable neighbourhood incorporating homes, employment space, community facilities, transport infrastructure and extensive green space.
When complete, the development will provide up to 4,000 new homes, alongside schools, local centres and supporting infrastructure, designed to sit naturally alongside Canterbury’s existing urban fabric.
Appointed by the master developer, GummerLeathes, Turner & Townsend will play a central role in supporting the design, procurement and delivery of the infrastructure and public realm works forming Phase 1. The commission covers the full lifecycle of the phase, from pre‑construction through to handover and completion of the defects period.
Turner & Townsend will lead cost planning and cost control activities, procurement and tender support, contract administration and change management. The team will also support value engineering and provide commercial insight to help safeguard value and manage risk as the design and delivery programme progresses.
Phase 1 will establish the backbone infrastructure for the wider development, enabling future residential and mixed‑use phases to come forward while setting quality benchmarks for public realm, sustainability and long‑term placemaking. The scheme places a strong emphasis on sustainable transport, green infrastructure and community connectivity, supporting both new residents and the wider community.
“South Canterbury is a complex, long‑term development that will become a wonderful home to people and businesses.
“Our appointment reflects the importance of strong commercial leadership in delivering large‑scale, infrastructure‑led placemaking.
“We look forward to working closely with GummerLeathes and the wider consultant team to help establish a robust foundation for the project’s success.”
