PRESS RELEASE
Turner & Townsend, the global programme management company, has appointed Michael O’Connor Atkin as Director, Sports and Venues, Asia, strengthening its ability to support clients delivering complex, high-profile sports and entertainment developments across the region.
Michael brings over a decade of experience specialising in major venue projects, with a strong track record in helping clients turn ambitious ideas into projects that are clearly planned, commercially sound and successfully delivered. He joins the Asia business following an illustrious career in the UK, where he played a leading role in the delivery of large-scale arena developments.
Most recently, he led the commercial delivery of a flagship arena project in Cardiff, working at the centre of a nationally significant scheme. Known for his practical, hands-on approach, Michael combines deep commercial and risk expertise with a clear focus on what matters most to clients: clear decision-making, controlled risk and venues that open on time, perform commercially, and create great experiences.
During his time in the UK, Michael also helped grow Turner & Townsend’s Sports and Leisure team, supporting clients in a fast-evolving market and building the capability needed to deliver increasingly complex projects at scale.
Based in Tokyo, he will now lead the firm’s Sports & Venues offering across Asia, focusing on working closely with clients to shape strategies, manage risk and deliver world-class venues that stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape.
“Across Asia, we’re seeing huge ambition when it comes to sports and entertainment venues, but these projects are complex and the stakes are high. Clients want a partner who truly understands the pressures they are under and can help them make the right calls at the right time.
“Michael brings that balance of strong technical expertise and real-world delivery experience. He knows what it takes to get these projects over the line, and he works in a way that gives clients confidence. His appointment is a big step forward for us and for the clients we support in this space.”

“What I enjoy most about this sector is that these projects really matter. They are high-profile, they bring people together, and they have to work on every level, from the fan experience through to long-term commercial performance.
“Success isn’t just about opening day. It’s about how a venue performs over time. I work closely with clients to ensure decisions made early on translate into strong operations, resilient business models and sustained value.
“There’s a real opportunity across Asia right now and I’m looking forward to working with clients to make these projects a success.”
