Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne (APAM) has appointed Turner & Townsend to provide project management, contract administration, and commercial management services to deliver the Terminal 2 (T2) North Infill Security Enhancement (NISE) project.
As part of this project, the existing baggage handling system will be replaced with next-generation technology, high-speed checked bag screening machines, and a tote-based Independent Carrier System (ICS).
The NISE project will be a benchmark for secure, efficient, cost-effective airport operations and provide room for future expansion plans.
Normal airport operations will be maintained while the project is delivered to allow the airport, airlines, and other commercial partners to recover from the impact of the pandemic.
Post pandemic passenger numbers are increasing, with the airport experiencing a 138 percent growth in the financial year 2022/2023 compared to 2021/2022. Melbourne Airport was the first Australian airport to surpass pre-pandemic levels of international passenger capacity.
The NISE project is part of the broader T2 development and builds on the global professional services company's previous appointment as project managers for Melbourne Airport’s expansion of international security screening in March 2019.
“We have supported Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne’s T2 development since 2017, and our recent reappointment aligns with the resurgence of airport traffic post-pandemic.
This project is timely as Melbourne Airport is experiencing an increase in international passenger numbers, and it plays a pivotal role in maintaining currency and operational efficiency for the airport.”
