Client’s requirements

As part of their capital investment works, Hilton Worldwide is undertaking a full refurbishment and upgrade of the Hilton Hotel in Durban to maintain quality and align the hotel with the Hilton brand values and architecture, which have changed over the years.

Our contribution

Turner & Townsend has been commissioned to provide full programme, project and construction management services for the phased construction works on the hotel. This includes the full refurbishment of 327 rooms, the lobby, ballroom and restaurant, Presidential Suite, executive lounge and meeting rooms as well as the upgrade of dated service infrastructure.

A particular challenge to the project was the continuation of hotel operations and maintaining a quality guest experience in the areas not allocated for works during the project.

Making the difference

As part of our role we provided a full-time site based project manager to oversee and manage the contractor, FF&E suppliers, as well as the specialist subcontractors required to undertake this project.

Because of the very tight timeframes available to complete each phase of works, we introduced and implemented a stringent handover and commissioning (de-snagging) programme, to establish a productive sequence of works for trades and specialist contractors. This enabled the project team to meet the tight deadlines for hotel operational readiness while delivering the quality results the client expected.
