Redeveloping George Bush Intercontinental Airport with Houston Airport System

More than 46 million passengers travelled through IAH in Houston in 2023, including at least 10 million international passengers - making this among the USA's top 10 busiest international airports. We provided executive programme management services to support the airport’s redevelopment and to expand its international facilities.

Realizing the vision

The IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program (ITRP) includes refurbishing the existing Terminal D and demolishing the Terminal D/E parking garage. The refurbishment will create a state-of-the-art international terminal central processing hub with ticketing counters, security checkpoint lanes, and a baggage claim area.

The terminal’s new design incorporates the latest self-bag drop and boarding gate technologies. The International Terminal Complex will support IAH international flight operations for more than a dozen airlines. Additional gates will accommodate continued international airline growth and larger widebody aircraft, while significantly improving the overall passenger experience.

As part of an enhanced passenger experience, the airport’s new Terminal D-West Pier—a 160,000-square-foot expansion of the existing Terminal D—opened in late 2024. It includes a copper-colored ceiling inspired by Houston’s live oak trees and a 380-foot LED wall, bringing Terminal D’s total footprint to nearly 500,000 square feet.

This expansion reflects Houston’s local culture and communities and supports economic growth for surrounding neighborhoods—helping drive growth across the region.

Transforming a terminal  

We provided executive program management services as an extension of the HAS executive team, including program-level leadership across all phases of the program lifecycle—from development through design and construction.

The ITRP is the most significant expansion project ever undertaken by HAS and is playing a major role in supporting the growth and development of the nation’s fourth-largest city.

Sustainability and improved user experience

The project supports sustainability targets set by HAS and has included construction aligned with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating specifications. Environmentally sustainable materials have been used throughout the build and fit-out, including recycling significant portions of the demolished parking structure and concourse.

The terminal’s redevelopment will significantly improve the customer experience and, upon completion, will support flight operations for more than 12 international airlines.
