Delivering The Greenhouse, Singapore’s first net-zero international school building
Education in Motion (EiM)’s The Greenhouse at Dulwich College (Singapore) is a state-of-the-art net-zero building that can achieve over 100 percent energy savings and offset 216 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually with an eco-envelope which consists of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) panels and an innovative rainwater harvesting system.
Located in Bukit Batok, the Dulwich College (Singapore) campus will cater close to 3,000 students aged two to 18 years with the addition of The Greenhouse.
The seven-storey building will generate energy from solar panels, maximise natural light and ventilation, reduce water usage through a rainwater harvesting system, and use smart sensors which will be linked to the building management system.
Our Singapore team was appointed to provide project management and cost and commercial management services for the construction of this pioneering project.
The Greenhouse is the first international school building in Singapore to be certified Green Mark Platinum Zero Energy by the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA), with three merit badges awarded for Health and Wellbeing (Hw), Intelligence (In), and Maintainability (Mt).
An innovative sustainable design feature has been the successful integration of electricity-generating solar photovoltaic cells into glass panels to create a structured shelter for The Greenhouse’s rooftop garden. Sustainable materials are used throughout the building, including kinetic floor tiles, energy-generating gym equipment, a plastic recycling machine and hydroponics to grow plants and herbs.
The Greenhouse will benefit students with a variety of creative learning spaces, a 400-seat multi-purpose auditorium, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) workshop spaces, a professional teaching kitchen, film and media suites, performing arts spaces and computer science classrooms. The building also includes a two-storey library, workspaces, study rooms and social areas for the school’s pre-university students.
Ali Mohmadi, Director, Real Estate, Singapore, attended the project’s opening ceremony, which was officiated by Minister for National Development and Minister-in-Charge of Social Services Integration, Desmond Lee, and attended by British High Commissioner to Singapore, Kara Owen CMG.
