Client’s requirements

The Department for Education in South Australia is investing in a world class school for years 8 to 12 with a project value of AUD100m.

Working in collaboration with the Department of Planning, Transport and Instructure (the State’s Government project delivery body) Turner & Townsend has been appointed to provide project management services, including the use of an innovative procurement model.

The Adelaide CBD High School is the first of its kind, setting the standard for vertical schools. The school will specialise in Health and Sciences subjects and cater for up to 1,250 students.

It is being purpose built for contemporary learning and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). It will feature a contemporary library, art studios, music and drama practice spaces, and food technology kitchens, as well as science, design and technology laboratories.

The vertical design enables the school to be located close to excellent transport networks, while the greater density of students in integrated facilities enhances the education environment.

Our contribution

The project is aligned with three of South Australia’s strategic priorities, namely Creating a Vibrant City, Safe Communities Healthy Neighbourhoods, and Every Chance for Every Child.

To support these priorities, we’re project managing the delivery of an education setting that enables innovative teaching and individualised learning, incorporation of new technology, community involvement, and environmental sustainability.

Making the difference

The innovative procurement model is a hybrid of the competitive early contractor involvement (ECI) and design and construct processes. Which involved two principal contractors, working together in the same room, provided early constructability, time and cost advice to the design team.

Then they provided fixed-price, which providing the state with best value and certainty of cost and time. Project delivery is being supported by our high-performance team framework, which equips the team with necessary tools to succeed.

The project is currently on schedule to be school ready for Term 1, 2019 and is on budget.
