Transforming Sydney’s public transport system
This project has been driven by the Sydney’s need for new transport solutions, with the city’s population expected to reach six million by the 2030s. Transport for NSW’s Sydney Metro redevelopment project provides high-frequency, driverless trains to ease pressure on traditional rail services.
Each metro line supports major employment hubs, helping to deliver better access to jobs and stimulating economic growth. The city’s suburban rail system currently carries about 24,000 passengers an hour per line. The new system aims to increase this capacity to 40,000.
An advanced rail network for the capital
Sydney Metro is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Australia, setting a new benchmark in integrated transport planning, sustainable urban development and major programme execution.
We were appointed to lead Sydney Metro’s long-term, portfolio-wide Project Management Office service (PMO-S) contract. We’re further improving a world-class and digitally enabled programme. Our role spans all Sydney Metro projects, as well as studies for future network expansion.
With support from HKA, Deloitte and Logikal, we are improving efficiencies across the programme. We do this by applying rigorous project controls, standardising working methods, and adopting digital controls solutions. This includes 5D BIM and Digital Twin technologies.
We have delivered a range of services including business case development, procurement strategy advisory and contract management. This ensures that each phase is underpinned by best-in-class cost assurance, governance and risk mitigation.
Our services continue to support the construction, operation and maintenance of all the system’s four metro lines.
Sustainable development and diversity in supply chains
Transport for NSW has set out to deliver a more sustainable transportation network. Projections indicate that by 2036, the complete network will reduce total weekday car trips in the city by more than 80,000, reducing road congestion and delivering significant environmental benefits.
Transport for NSW is also committed to increasing diversity in its workforce and supply chains, focusing on Indigenous participation, which is being implemented across the programme. To date, the programme has engaged over 500 recognised Indigenous businesses to support upcoming work packages.
Our support for this major programme is delivering successful project outcomes that will leave a legacy. It will equip Transport for NSW with the tools, systems and strategies needed for continuous improvement, long-term sustainability and future network expansion.
