Turner & Townsend announced as preferred bidder for HARP ITA role
Turner & Townsend has been named as preferred bidder by United Utilities as the Independent Technical Adviser (ITA) on its Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP).
Supplying over 1.8bn litres of water per day to seven million customers, United Utilities is responsible for water and wastewater services across the North West of England. With an estimated construction cost of around £2.5-2.9bn, HARP will be United Utilities’ largest infrastructure project since privatisation in 1989.
Completed in the 1950s, the original aqueduct was constructed to increase the water supply to Manchester and the Pennines. The new programme will replace all six tunnel sections along the length of the aqueduct ensuring the maintenance and resilience of the structure and providing the region’s customers with clean water for generations to come.
As the ITA, Turner & Townsend (together with their partners OTBe and Grant Thornton) will play a crucial role in ensuring that management of the programme is assured and verified by independent parties. The ITA role will be in place until conclusion of the construction period.
James Corrigan, Managing Director, Infrastructure, UK at Turner & Townsend, said:
"For seven decades, the Haweswater Aqueduct has reliably provided water to 2.5 million customers and we are delighted to be selected to provide independent assurance of this major programme, ensuring that it will continue to do so for years to come."
More broadly, across all UK regions, Turner & Townsend is dedicated to developing and maintaining a more efficient water network.
"We believe focusing on resilience, innovation, and sustainability will be crucial to secure a robust and dependable water infrastructure for future generations."
