Delivering the Net Zero Acceleration Programme

SSE is at the forefront of efforts to decarbonise the UK power system, having contributed to the development and delivery of over 2.5 gigawatts of installed offshore windfarms operating in UK and Irish waters. This includes building the network infrastructure required to connect the rapidly growing renewable capacity to the grid, and supporting increasing electricity demand as net-zero power helps other parts of the economy to decarbonise.

The successful delivery of these projects is key to SSE’s ambitious Net Zero Acceleration Programme and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy. Yet the investment environment is complex. The challenge is not only ensuring the right projects are selected, but also that they are delivered to the agreed scope, environmental, safety and quality requirements as well as on time and on budget. Assessing business cases for new investments involves a complex interplay of policies, regulations and low carbon frameworks set against a backdrop of ensuring best value to the consumer and return on investment for SSE shareholders.

Building the right capabilities

For over 10 years’ we have partnered with SSE Renewables, SSE Networks and SSE major projects across the generation, distribution and transmission areas of their business.

Our frameworks include commercial and contract management, estimating and project controls, construction, design management services and health, safety and environment services. Our teams also help deliver improved performance across the development, construction and operational phases of onshore and offshore wind, and other projects including networks, hydro and most recently carbon capture and storage in the UK and Ireland. Our role varies from integration within SSE project delivery teams to providing discrete assurance scopes at a project or corporate level including capital investment business planning and regulatory compliance.

In supporting SSE’s ambitious 13 gigawatts installed capacity by 2031, our team has provided contract and procurement management support for offshore wind farms including Seagreen, Beatrice, Greater Gabbard, Berwick Bank, Arklow and Dogger Bank. We have also supported delivery of the sub-station civils works within the challenging Shetland HVDC project and its required standby solution. Current projects include the Coire Glas hydro pumped storage scheme and retrofitting existing power plants with carbon capture and storage technology.

Adapting to changing demands

As a key supplier to SSE, we identify, assess and understand how positive outcomes and benefits can be realised across their projects, while mitigating the market’s risk appetite and addressing any key capability or capacity constraints.

We leverage our extensive knowledge of the global power industry to embed insights and best practice across SSE’s portfolio. As SSE continues to grow, we are delivering increased confidence in offshore and onshore wind projects set up through providing early independent advice on market and supply chain capacity, capability and fragility.

Paul Leddie, Director of Transmission Procurement, SSE said:

SSE is at the forefront of efforts to decarbonise the UK power system and for over 10 years’ Turner & Townsend has played an integral role in developing strategies, maintaining controls and meeting programme milestones across our varying portfolio of projects.

"Their understanding of local markets and supply chains as well as project and commercial management expertise is supporting SSE to meet its ambitious net- zero programme."
