ÖBB Infrastuktur AG - Semmering Base Tunnel
Making new connections in Central Europe
Forming part of one of the world’s longest railway tunnels, the Semmering base tunnel is one of the most important major infrastructure projects in Central Europe.
Completion date: Ongoing
- 27.3km tunnel
- 230km/hour train speed
The Semmering base tunnel’s two-tube railway tunnel will supplement and ease the pressure on the current mountain line from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag, which forms part of the Ghega railway track, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
It will consist of two parallel guided tunnels with a diameter of approx 10m and a gap of 40-70m between one another. They are to be intermittently connected to each another at a maximum distance of 500m by accessible cross passages, i.e. cross-cuts.
- Vehicle speed 230km/h
- Freight trains up to 1,600t
- 27.3km tunnel with NATM (new Austrian tunnelling method) and TBM driving systems
- Five shafts with up to 450m depth
- Emergency stop underground
- Landfill up to 425 million m³
We are responsible for the project supervision of three tunnel sections (SBT1.1, SBT2.1 and SBT3.1) in respect to the cost efficiency and effectiveness for the implementation phase of the aforementioned projects.
