Client’s requirements
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is responsible for one of the largest public transit systems in the world. On an average weekday they support over 11 million transit passengers.
The total transit asset portfolio is valued at USD1 trillion and work is underway to bring the ageing infrastructure into the 21st century.
Investment is being made in more than physical assets, MTA’s Asset Management System is being digitised to help drive a series of key objectives: managing the safety, reliability and performance of existing infrastructure, meeting customer service expectations and managing major capacity improvements projects.
The goal is organisational change at an enterprise level to deliver a smarter, fit-for-purpose transportation network that is safe, sustainable and resilient.

Our contribution
We have been appointed as the asset management specialist helping MTA ensure every dollar spent on their USD1tn asset portfolio is spent wisely.
Through our subsidiary AMCL, we worked across MTA and its agencies to establish an asset management system which defines every element of the enterprise, how different elements work together and identifies the priorities for organisational improvement. This includes full explanations of the processes, IT systems, information, and business capabilities required to manage the physical infrastructure.
We set out an Asset Management Policy, signed by the MTA Chairman, with defined business and sustainability objectives. These objectives underpin all internal decision-making about assets.
The asset management system also addresses the performance measures, data capture and reporting required at a strategic, tactical and operational level.
Making the difference
The asset management system has helped MTA immediately de-risk expensive IT and technology implementations.
It enables better justified planning and analysis, with clearer definition of objectives, processes, data protocols and reporting requirements. This enhanced access to data and reporting will allow MTA to demonstrably drive asset performance, increase value for money and improve safety, resilience and sustainability.
The Asset Management System is the foundation for MTA to continually improve the enterprise capabilities.
