Strengthening the capacity of rural and regional health services

Australia's NSW Government is committed to providing world-class care for people in rural communities by leading the expansion of regional healthcare assets across the state. This will be achieved through improving access to appropriate and comprehensive healthcare.

The Griffith Base Hospital Redevelopment will address urgent priorities in service needs, access to ambulatory care and chair-based services, and will improve the experience of patients, visitors and carers.

The redevelopment will ease pressures from service demand projections, driven by an ageing population in the Griffith area. This will be achieved by consolidating dated buildings distributed across the campus into integrated, contemporary, purpose-built facilities.

End-to-end project management

We have provided project management services to facilitate the planning, design and delivery of new facilities and buildings which are enabling the implementation of contemporary models of care and increased service integration. This is being achieved through the co-location of services and departments into a centralised building footprint.

The development scope was to build on the existing brownfield campus, with minimal disruption to the clinical operations of the existing facility. We managed this by implementing a complex strategy that involved three rounds of early and enabling works, including the creation of a temporary renal and pediatrics ward, along with consolidation and relocation of all non-clinical services into a single facility.

Developing a state-of-the-art facility

The redevelopment will deliver a new consolidated, integrated and contemporary building through a clearly articulated masterplan that opens the site for future expansion. It will also create new open spaces for the public, patients, staff and visitors.

Griffith Base Hospital Redevelopment is the second largest hospital within the Murrumbidgee Local Health District. Once completed, the facility will provide acute medical, surgical, maternity, pediatric and sub-acute inpatient services, as well as emergency and critical care, medical imaging and a range of ambulatory, outpatient and community healthcare services.

The redevelopment will provide the community with a variety of social benefits, including:

  • Improved accessibility to healthcare for patients and carers.
  • Improved healthcare access to culturally appropriate spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Enhanced social cohesion due to improved accessibility of healthcare services in regional and rural areas.
  • Improved contemporary facilities and IT access, supporting nurse and doctor training, as well as improved access and connection to the wider healthcare network.
