Responding to Nashville’s needs

The new ‘Downtown Y’ will comprise an extra 60,000 sq ft to the original building, creating a 180,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility that will meet Nashville’s growing needs in relation to community wellbeing resources. It will feature expanded gym areas, meeting spaces, a children’s play area and a new indoor aquatics centre. Once constructed, the YMCA will be a place where people, across multiple generations, can connect and help each other in their well-being journeys.

Mitigating construction side effects

The building will not only serve as a hub for physical fitness and recreational activities, but also foster social connections and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. Situated between two high-rise residential towers, 1000 Church Street is in the heart of downtown Nashville, a location which experiences high pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The YMCA remains open during construction and coordinating materials deliveries and the mitigation of noise and dust are critical considerations in the project’s delivery.

Collaboration and engagement

Key to our role is leading engagement with and collaboration between multiple stakeholders throughout the construction process to ensure the project’s success. We are providing, on a partial pro bono basis, project and cost management services as well as project controls to ensure the job is completed on time and on budget.

Chip Howorth, Property Committee Chair, Middle Tennessee YMCA Association, said:

Turner & Townsend has provided real value as a trusted partner on all our major expansion projects from 2020 onwards. From negotiating contracts to evaluating risk, the team has worked with contractors to make sure costs are kept down, while continuing to deliver the quality required.

"We can't give enough credit to Turner & Townsend for helping us do that. The legacy of this project is that we’ll be able to serve downtown Nashville residents for decades to come."
