As a trainee cost manager I’m responsible for supporting and advising on the commercial and wider functions of construction projects. I help my current client Network Rail achieve great business outcomes by ensuring works stay within budget, administering the contract in line with the conditions of contract and ensuring all project information is organised and readily available to senior management. Having a strong work ethic and willingness to learn is key for me to help our clients achieve their goals. 

I joined Turner & Townsend in 2017, starting on the five-year apprenticeship programme. This included enrolment at London South Bank University on the five-year part-time BSc Quantity Surveying course. In October 2017 I joined my first client, HS2 Ltd as Commercial Apprentice within the Central C1 team, working on the Main Works Civils Contract (NEC3, Option C). During this time I gained valuable insight into the management of complex construction projects and programmes. Most recently, I joined the P2R programme, working on completing and closing out the Crossrail Anglia Residual Works. 

Q. How do you contribute to Turner & Townsend making a difference?

A. I contribute to making a difference through the daily service I provide to our clients. By being a dedicated member of the client teams, I provide services to the best of my ability and always ensure I fully understand the requirements of the client and deliver upon those.

Q. What is the emerging trend in your industry specialism and how are you responding to this?

A. Climate change and reducing carbon emissions is a trend across all industries. In the coming years, Quantity Surveyors could play a significant role in combating climate change on the construction projects and contracts they manage. We can strongly influence these changes by being innovative and finding efficiencies within the works. To respond to this, I keep up to date with new technologies and methods in the industry and assess whether these methods can be applied to my current project.

Q. How do you see your career progressing at Turner & Townsend?

A. There are endless opportunities to learn new skills and improve competence through the brilliant support networks within the company. I have regular one-to-one meetings with my line manager to map out my career plan which inspires me to achieve my aspirations over the next five years and will contribute to the longevity of my career with Turner & Townsend.
