Turner & Townsend to help deliver Borstel’s new diagnostic and research laboratory, Germany
Turner & Townsend has been appointed to support the construction of a new diagnostic and research laboratory for tuberculosis —a biosafety level 3 facility— in Borstel, Germany.
The Research Center Borstel, which is part of the Leibniz Institute for Medicine and Biosciences, is focused on investigating infectious and non-infectious lung diseases. It is one of the leading tuberculosis research centres globally, and its success is often attributed to the unique co-location and collaboration between basic scientists, diagnostic service providers and clinicians at the National Reference Center (NRC) of Mycobacteria. The NRC, appointed by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Robert Koch Institute, operates not only nationally, but has been appointed a Supranational Reference Laboratory by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The building of a new level 3 diagnostic and research laboratory will allow the provision of state-of-the-art and technically specialised diagnostic services, and a unique link between basic science and diagnostic improvement.
Turner & Townsend has been commissioned to provide project management, stakeholder management and risk management services, and will coordinate the procurement of the operating license for S1/S2/S3 type laboratories (laboratories with permission to work with genetically modified organisms).
The project is financed by the German Federal and State Governments, adding to the number of stakeholders that will be managed in this project. The project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
Director Niall O’Reilly commented on the new win:
We are excited to have been commissioned to support this new laboratory for the Research Center Borstel. It is a unique project which requires specialised skills, and a profound knowledge of laboratories.
