Turner & Townsend project wins two RICS awards
Our Birmingham UK real estate team has won two prestigious RICS West Midlands awards - for our work with Birmingham City Council on the Wholesale Market relocation project. The team were recognised in both the infrastructure and regeneration categories.
Two areas have been regenerated through this development - the new market is a vibrant economic asset to the region and a vital supplier to independent food retailers. While the 22 acre former market site is to be transformed into 2,000 new homes, a public square and leisure attractions.
Megan Bestwick, Project Manager and lead on the Wholesale Market relocation commented: “I’m absolutely thrilled that the Wholesale Market has won these awards. There was no blueprint for this type of facility and so the specification had to be developed in conjunction with tenants, which presented many challenges, given the number and different types of businesses. I have absolutely relished working on this project since Turner & Townsend was appointed to assist in the relocation and help secure successful outcomes for both Birmingham City Council and their wholesale market tenants. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we will fly the flag for Birmingham at the national awards later in the year.”
Chair of the RICS judging panel Bryony Martin said: "Birmingham City Council and the Birmingham Wholesale Fresh Produce Association have worked together to create the largest integrated wholesale fresh food market in Europe. It has also given the market renewed dynamism in a purpose-built development....attracting new business on a national scale and anchoring the Witton Food Hub.”
