Turner & Townsend makes literacy pledge to improve social mobility in the UK
We have committed to tackle the UK’s literacy crisis together with 62 other leading businesses by signing up to the Vision for Literacy Business Pledge.
As part of our goal to improve social mobility, we have partnered with the National Literacy Trust to launch a primary school programme which will go live in five schools across the UK in spring 2018.
Through book gifting, reading workshops, teacher resources and a schools challenge co-created with the National Literacy Trust, we hope to make a real difference to children’s lives.
We know that literacy skills are a key enabler for social mobility. Therefore I am delighted that we are delivering a programme with the National Literacy Trust to create better opportunities for hundreds of children. James Dand Chief Operating Officer
Did you know...?
Research released by the National Literacy Trust in 2017 revealed that a third of young people aged 8 to 16 said that they didn’t have a book of their own at home. The study demonstrated that book ownership is very closely linked to a love of reading and the development of literacy skills.
Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, said “Over the past decade, more than 500,000 disadvantaged children started school without the reading, writing and communication skills they need to succeed in education, work and life – their futures cut short before they even started. But with the backing of UK business, we have the power to transform these young lives through literacy. We are delighted to be working with so many fantastic businesses who, throughout the year, will demonstrate their commitment to creating a society where talented children and young people – no matter what their background – have the same opportunities to fulfil their potential.”
About the Vision for Literacy Business Pledge
Launched by the National Literacy Forum (led by the National Literacy Trust) in 2015, the Pledge has seen a 46% increase in the number of businesses committing their support over the past three years.
This year 63 businesses, including Turner & Townsend, have committed to taking action to boost literacy levels and improve social mobility.
