RICS Infrastructure Award in Leeds

The new Knostrop Sludge Treatment Facility, by Yorkshire Water and Turner & Townsend in Leeds, has won the regional infrastructure award at the RICS Yorkshire and Humber awards.

Working collaboratively, the team masterminded an innovative and sustainable sewage treatment works which will act as a regional sludge facility, providing greater flexibility across the whole of Yorkshire.

The RICS award recognises a ground-breaking anaerobic digestion process which will replace the existing on-site sludge incineration, with an energy generating green solution. The new facility was constructed within the boundary of the existing brownfield site while maintaining operation of the existing facility and to allow for future expansion.

The sludge treatment process previously required the use of an incinerator which was over 20 years old and no longer economically viable, or able to treat the sludge to the required capacity. Furthermore, with the introduction of new environmental rules, it meant the site would not meet the statutory requirements and a new treatment process was needed.

Mick Grace, Director commented:

“We are delighted to have won this award, which recognises the excellence of this innovative green energy generating solution.”
