HRH the Princess Royal opens Liverpool’s groundbreaking new neuroscience unit
HRH the Princess Royal has formally opened a multi award-winning new building at the UK’s only hospital trust dedicated to providing neurology, neurosurgery and specialist spinal care.
We successfully project managed construction of the Sid Watkins building. Taking the lead in turning the energy-efficient design into reality – delivering a Guaranteed Maximum Price assessment within 12 weeks of our appointment – and then successfully delivering all construction phases.
Named after Professor Sid Watkins - the Liverpool neurosurgeon who led the introduction of life-saving safety improvements in Formula 1 for more than two decades – provides 30 beds for patients in need of intensive rehabilitation, as well as dedicated pain management and brain injury units and a medical education centre.
The Sid Watkins building’s sustainable and innovative design helped it win both Building Better Healthcare’s Sustainable Development of the Year Award, and the Healthcare Estates Project of the Year Award in 2015.
Stewart Binns, Director, commented:
“Both the design and construction of the Sid Watkins building will serve as a prototype for best practice in the healthcare sector.
“The structure was effectively built from the outside in, using an innovative ‘Fabric First’ approach that makes the building as energy-efficient as possible, thereby reducing energy consumption and decreasing energy costs during the operational phase.
“Turner & Townsend is delighted to have played such an important role in the successful delivery of an award-winning structure that will ensure the Walton Centre continues to offer the world-class care and neuroscience expertise for which it is famous.”
Stuart Moore, Director of Strategy & Planning of the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, added:
"From the moment you step inside the Sid Watkins building you can tell. It is a superb building and provides an outstanding environment for patient care. We are constantly complimented on it by patients and visitors. Turner & Townsend were central to the excellent team working that made it such a success."
