The UK government published its draft National Policy Statement (NPS).

On Thursday 2 February, as Heathrow’s expansion programme for a third runway passed its first delivery milestone, the UK Government published its draft Airports National Policy Statement (NPS) and begins the process when the public will be consulted on the proposals.

The NPS sets out why the Government believes the scheme is the right one for the UK, including:

  • the need for additional airport capacity in the south-east of England
  • why that need is best met by a north-west runway at Heathrow Airport
  • the specific requirements that the applicant for a new north-west runway will need to meet to gain development consent.

Vincent Clancy, Chairman and CEO commented: “The national policy statement (NPS) and consultation process is a welcome step forward for Heathrow’s expansion plans. The business case for a third runway has been successfully made and with Heathrow’s track record of providing world-class airport facilities they are best placed to deliver the hub capacity the UK needs.”
