Award win for Melbourne Airport Airfield project

Alongside Jacobs and Antoun Civil Engineering, we have won Corporate Project of the Year at the Australian Airports Association (AAA) National Airport Industry Awards for our work on Melbourne Airport’s Airfield Pavement Slab Replacement using Rapid Set Cement Construction (RSCC) methodology.

Melbourne Airport is Australia’s busiest 24/7 airport, making any kind of construction activity in the airside environment challenging. In such a busy environment, infrastructure renewal works like heavy duty pavement replacements are required to be completed without disruption to airport operations and customer experience.

Due to significant wear and deterioration over time, 24 existing concrete pavement slabs needed replacing. We were appointed to provide project management and construction superintendent services.

To guarantee completion within an allocated and limited night time access window of six hours, fast curing and fast construction methodology was selected by Melbourne Airport.

This was the largest rapid set cement project of its kind in the world, with close to 1,000m3 of concrete delivered over a six week period. Each replacement was completed within the allocated shutdown with zero disruptions to airport operations and all safety and environmental objectives achieved.

Simon Gandy, Chief Strategy & Development Officer at Melbourne Airport, said:

Melbourne Airport is deeply committed to delivering a world-class passenger journey through our facility, from the freeway to the runway. The work Turner & Townsend delivered for this project has been instrumental in helping us build a safe and compliant airfield, at the same time as minimising or even eliminating some of the disruptions to aircraft movements that were previously unavoidable. Ultimately that’s delivering a great outcome for thousands of passengers every year, and we congratulate Turner & Townsend on having this important contribution recognised by the industry.

Darren Munton, Head of Infrastructure for Australia and New Zealand, said:

"Turner & Townsend has been working with Melbourne Airport for many years and has been fortunate enough to work with the Airport on some of the industry’s most challenging and iconic projects. We are extremely proud to have contributed to the successful delivery of the Pavement Slab Replacement Project in particular and play our part in maintaining the Airport’s safe operations and customer experience. To receive the Corporate Project of the Year Award and the recognition of the aviation industry is testament to the hard work and dedication of our highly experienced team."
