Development Programmes

Turner & Townsend is a global consultancy, applying technical excellence in their work across the real estate, infrastructure and natural resources sectors.

We offer a variety of areas for graduates and placement students to utilise and develop their skills. Whether you relish day-to-day challenges of project management, process the precision and communication demands of project controls, appreciate the complexity of cost management or have the necessary strategic vision for advisory, the challenge is here for you to take.

When you apply to one of our programmes: Graduate, summer placement or year placement you can let us know if you have a preference for one of our technical specialisms as well as any location preferences. At application stage there will also be an option to be flexible to give you the opportunity to be considered for a number of different roles across our business.

Graduate Development Programme (GDP)

Our GDP provides you with a structured learning environment that supports you to become a well-rounded consultant and accelerate your career as far and fast as possible.

You will be provided with a development path that is aligned to our internal competency frameworks and supports professional development and qualifications, including RICS, APM, CIOB and ICE. This will help you and your manager monitor and plan your learning needs in order for you to progress in your career with us.

The GDP is designed to be:

  • a platform to enhance knowledge and gain first-hand experience
  • a training schedule to support and capture your learning and development needs and achievements
  • a learning tool document to track and report the development of your capabilities.

The 24-month GDP incorporates a training programme that will provide you with technical and behavioural training to enhance your knowledge and skills.

Undergraduate placements

We provide opportunities for those at university to gain valuable industry experience during their degree and earn while they learn through structured summer and year-placements.

Our year placements typically start in September and our summer placements are between 8 and 12 weeks usually starting in June. We encourage applications from those in their penultimate year at university but will consider those in their first year or second year of a four year degree.

If you complete a placement with us, you will have the opportunity to fast-track on to another placement or directly on to the GDP. Your fast-track route will be determined by the amount of time you have left at university. If you are just returning for your final year, you will be able to fast-track you straight on to the GDP.

Placements allow you to get a head start in your career before you’ve even graduated and gives you an opportunity to gain an insight into a career at Turner & Townsend.

We do encourage all candidates to be as mobile as they can to make the most of the opportunities available to them. Due to the nature of our work you will not necessarily be based in our office location. It is likely that you will visit and work from client sites over the course of your graduate programme. For some offices you may need to be able to drive due to the location of some of our clients.

All of our graduates and placement students will develop technical expertise in line with one of the services we deliver to clients. At application stage you will be able to indicate your order of preference for the following development programme areas:

Cost and commercial management

Cost management is vital in delivering the best value to our clients, maximising their return on investment. In your role you will support the Commission Manager by taking on responsibility for effectively delivering a wide range of tasks to the highest quality standards. Some of the key responsibilities include: estimating and producing cost plans, drafting the procurement documentation, checking and analysing tenders, conducting cost checks and valuations, analysing the numbers for the final accounts and liaising with the client, contractors and designers. If you have completed or are completing a degree in quality surveying this is the programme for you. If you haven’t don’t worry we will sponsor you to complete a RICS accredited masters.

Controls and performance

Project controls is a vital part of the project team which gives the project manager the ability to understand how their project is progressing and what the likely outcome is. In your role you will provide support to our project controls commissions in respect of the planning, cost control and reporting functions. Some of the key responsibilities will be cost collection, creating and maintain budgets and schedules, management and interpretation of project data, change control and collating reports.

Project and programme management

Project management reduces risk and helps clients deliver projects in a consistent and improved manner. Project managers are responsible for the day to day management of the various aspects of the project, working collaboratively with different disciplines. In your role you will support the project management commissions, taking responsibility for effectively delivering a vast range of tasks to the highest quality standards. Some of the key responsibilities will be establishing effective processes and systems to be utilised throughout the project, producing project plans and preparing written project communication materials.

Safety, health and quality (SHQ)

The SHQ team cover everything from CDM, fire, quality and management systems to training and access consultancy. In your role you will gain a huge breadth of experience working as a part of a large team to learn our methodologies as well as having the opportunity to manage your own project independently with accountability for delivery and generating income. You will receive training and support to develop your skills alongside your preferred route to IOSH chartership.


Advisory provides a range of specialist services that complement the programme and project delivery capability of our core sectors: real estate, infrastructure, and natural resources. During the two year graduate programme you will gain a huge breadth of experience working as a part of a large team to learn our methodologies as well as having the opportunity to manage your own project independently with accountability for delivery and generating income. In your role you will be providing management consultancy support on asset strategy, programme set-up and delivery, performance improvement and operational excellence.


Our Contract Services ‘intelligent procurement’ approach provides a procurement pathway from business and programme level strategy to contract award, managing the procurement process, implementing consistent procedures and engaging the supply chain. The team develop contract & commercial solutions for our clients which help maximise value from the supply chain and mitigate contractual risk. Our procurement & contract experts provide support and guidance to our clients through each stage of the process in order to develop optimised procurement solutions that deliver efficiencies and cost savings against their business requirements.

Technology and data

The technology team works to implement making technology smarter for a variety of clients. We can drive the right technology and data strategy from the start, setting up programmes and projects to establish effective information management, integrated reporting and collaborative delivery. The role give you the opportunity to gain experience across all four service areas within the Technology team, covering solutions advisory, building information modelling (BIM), capital projects and data & analytics.

Asset management

The asset management programme would give you the chance to work for AMCL, a T&T company and global leader in Asset Management. You will work in the Europe team supporting the Europe Delivery Manager in the delivery of a variety of consultancy and transformation projects for high profile infrastructure managers across multiple sectors. The role will provide you with an opportunity to work on a variety of asset management related projects including asset management system design, business architecture design, asset information and cost modelling projects.

Risk management

Our risk management team facilitate the process to identify areas of perceived risk through analysis and evaluation. The team support and implement an integrated risk management processes which provide a commercial solutions strategy for our clients. Within the team you will need to assess and prioritise threats and also identify opportunities. Some of the key responsibilities will be budget management, working with contractors to assess the contractor held risk and conducting quantitative risk assessment (cost and schedule) to inform project contingency levels.

2:1 or 1st in your undergraduate degree*

Right to live and work in the UK


*We will consider you with a 2:2 if you have a Masters in a relevant degree (Quantity Surveying, Construction Project Management etc) and can demonstrate the qualities we look for to a high level.

For year placements you should be completing a year in industry as part of your degree course. For summer placements you should currently be at university with at least a year left to complete following your placement. We expect you to be on track for a 2:1 or 1st in your degree.

Step 1 – Pre-Application

You can meet the team at one of our events to discuss the graduate and placement opportunities we offer.

Step 2 – Online application

Submit your CV and complete the online application questions. It is here that you will need to add you preferred locations along with outlining your programme preferences.

Step 3 – Video interview

If your online application is successful you will be asked to complete a video interview. The interview will focus on competency questions as well as your motivation for the opportunities Turner & Townsend offer. Please make sure you have done your research as you will be asked questions around Turner & Townsend and the projects we work on.

Step 4 – Assessment centre

If you are successful at video interview you will be invited to a full day assessment centre. The day will focus on different competencies along with your motivation for Turner & Townsend and the work we do. It will involve three activities – a group exercise, a presentation and an interview. If you are invited to an assessment centre full details of the will be sent to you in advance of the day so you will know what you should prepare.

Step 5 – On boarding

If you are made an offer to join Turner and Townsend you will need to complete the on boarding process. At this stage you will be made aware of the team you will be working in as well as the location.
