Our Australian offices are signatories to CitySwitch, a programme that works with the business community to manage energy and waste efficiency. This year, as part of our commitment to the programme, we initiated a review of our environmental management system (EMS) and development of a green action plan in Perth.
We invited a group of post-graduate architects from Curtin University to work with us, helping the students to gain experience in environmental sustainability. We shared performance information to aid their gap analysis of our environmental ethos versus practices, and supported their work on the business case for implementing changes, including calculations of potential costs and carbon savings.
Areas targeted for improvement were recycling and waste management, and implementation of an energy policy with a focus on employee behaviours. A detailed action plan was presented to managers internally and went on to be showcased during World Green Building Week in September 2016.
“Turner & Townsend have been model signatories in the CitySwitch Green Office Program. The team has been very proactive about identifying further environmental improvement opportunities.”
CitySwitch commended our Perth office and the students on the comprehensive review and action plan. “Turner & Townsend have been model signatories in the CitySwitch Green Office Program” said Phill Raso, CitySwitch Program Manager. “The team has been very proactive about identifying further environmental improvement opportunities.
“Their holistic approach to sustainability has seen them take on projects from waste management to behaviour change whilst also engaging with Curtin University students to influence the next generation of building professionals.”
Initiatives included in the action plan have already delivered positive changes in environmental performance and we will now measure energy efficiency annually to make sure we continue to meet our sustainability commitments.
