Adelaide Botanic High School is the first vertical school in South Australia based on contemporary learning principles and a leading example of sustainable design.

Surrounded by Adelaide Botanic Gardens, it provides students with a unique learning environment and joins a growing hub of arts facilities, educational institutions and businesses that are extending their connection with the wider community.

As project manager, we are supporting the ambitious sustainability objectives for the state and school, maximising the benefits of its vertical design and making sure environmental sustainability initiatives are followed through in construction. The school is designed to a five-star Green Star rating in accordance with the Green Building Council of Australia.

Nathan Hawkes, Regional Manager in our Adelaide office, explained why sustainability was a key driver behind the project:

A five-star accreditation aligns with the government’s aspiration to deliver smart, environmentally friendly buildings that minimise energy and water use and support Adelaide’s vision to become a carbon-neutral city.

“Vertical schools are built on a much smaller site compared to traditional horizontal campuses and this provides a lighter footprint when working within the confines of a restricted central business district brownfield site.

What’s particularly satisfying about the sustainability attributes of the school is the context they set for the students’ education.

The curriculum is focused on health and science. They can learn about their own environment, including solar panel integration, rainwater harvesting and the use of recycled water. Through this, they will discover how it contributes to their own wellbeing and that of the wider community and the planet.”
