Sustainability is today one of the dominant issues affecting decision making at the highest levels throughout the private sector and public sector organisations.

This issue crystallises in a growing recognition that the decisions we make today must take into account every aspect of the legacy they will leave for future generations, and this calls for a radical new approach to the balance we strike between our economic, social and environmental priorities.

Turner & Townsend offers an integrated portfolio of consultancy services developed to help our clients strike this balance – to find the best way to respond to the concept of sustainability not as an imposition or a burden, but as a major opportunity to achieve new objectives that can be measured at the triple bottom line.

We know that this can be achieved, because we’re already helping many of our clients to lead the way in new thinking in key areas of sustainability: in the development of successful new communities; in whole life appraisal, responsible procurement, construction and carbon management; in environmental and social responsibility, and in sustainable, forward-thinking business change and organisational development.

Drivers for Change

The world is changing.

Our society is now becoming increasingly challenged to tackle and take responsibility for the so called triple bottom line:-  social, economic and environmental matters when considering any development which creates an additional impact upon our environment.

There are a whole range of issues forcing society to recognise and mitigate the impact of new infrastructure and business decisions upon our built environment. Legislation is being created; revised and tightened to reinforce the message of our collective environmental responsibility throughout communities and the built environment, related matters and key drivers as follows:

Energy and Energy Consumption

  • Oil topping 100 dollars a barrel, and headed one way
  • “Green” taxes increasing year on year enforced Globally
  • C02 “shadow charge” of £26 per tonne will be required in all option appraisals for Government funded projects, and likely to increase.
  • Responsible energy usage in buildings from houses to corporate offices increasingly visible and enforceable

Water Conservation and Management

  • The cost to consumers of fresh water is increasing
  • Many Global regions do not have enough drinking water supply, including UK regions
  • Climate change is having an increasing impact upon water management and recycling demands

Materials and Waste

  • The Huge impact of EU legislation is driving improved waste management at all levels in our communities
  • Significant cash penalties will become enforceable if these targets are not complied with
  • Clever construction requires sustainable design and responsible materials usage during construction of a project
  • Sustainable Facilities Management and Operation of buildings requires a rethink of materials, components and resource utilisation

Land, Ecology and Biodiversity

  • Environmental impact of new development must be mitigated over a whole life time basis
  • Ecology and Biodiversity respected in everything we do
  • Alternative fuels: Are biofuel’s an answer when to fill a standard SUV takes equivalent corn to feed a person for a year

Connected Consultancy

We offer a holistic, comprehensive approach to sustainability because in the widest sense sustainability is a global issue.

The social, economic and environmental implications of sustainability are fundamentally inter-related. Every aspect of sustainability is connected, and so is our consultancy.

With our ‘global’ perspective we can help our clients gain the maximum advantage by addressing sustainability with an all-round vision that aligns strategic development with social and environmental responsibilities; capital investment with carbon management objectives; asset and human resource management with service delivery and financial models

Turner & Townsend has been developing the wide spectrum of expertise and experience required to deliver this comprehensive breadth of support for many years, working with private and public sector clients all over the world, drawing on all our skills in core areas of cost management, project management and management consultancy, and where necessary, creating tools to deliver the most effective results in sustainable performance improvement.

Regions and Communities
Our Regions and Communities drive lifestyles and business needs, which shape and impact the “Organisations and Assets” that we create, and over life every aspect of the “Web of Sustainability” will impact at some point during this lifetime.

Organisation and Assets
In response to the business and corporate obligations of our clients, we create “Buildings and Services” to reflect the requirements of the “Organisations and Assets” that translate the operational and management over lifetime, from business planning, through procurement and ultimately into responsible management of organisations and assets.

Buildings and Services
The “Web of Sustainability” is centered on the facilities, buildings and operational services that we create and set to use over lifetime. As Construction and Management Consultants we can deliver all of the connected consultancy services required by our clients, but we also have a lead responsibility to continuously improve our services and refine the buildings and services our clients require.

Delivering Value

As a leading global consultancy in project delivery and business improvement, Turner & Townsend has been helping to lead the way in integrating sustainability into business improvement and project delivery for many years, and we have been closely involved in many key projects that have set the benchmarks in sustainable construction, sustainable business development and sustainable communities.

We have helped deliver many of the highest BREEAM rated projects ever undertaken in the UK, including the new headquarters for BRE itself, City Hall, home of the London Mayor, the multi-award-winning Scottish Natural Heritage headquarters, and the Dalby Forest Visitors Centre – The Prime Minister’s Building of the Year 2007.

Turner & Townsend was a lead consultant for the delivery of the pioneering and hugely successful Crown Street Regeneration Project in Glasgow; we are supporting the planning and delivery of dozens of major regeneration schemes in cities throughout the UK and Ireland, and we have helped deliver the Zero Carbon Feasibility study for Thames Gateway.

In the drive to enable clients to clearly evaluate the costs and benefits of sustainability in a world of uncertainty and rapid change, we have developed a series of uniquely sophisticated databases and models that offer clear and definite information on which our clients can base the crucial strategic decisions that sustainability demands.

We have developed processes to capture the knowledge and experience we have gained in every facet of sustainability and apply it to projects as diverse as Sunderland Arc and the development of sustainable communities in South Africa.

And we have always recognised our own responsibility to apply the best practice we offer our clients to our own business – taking every step we can to reduce our environmental impact; encouraging the best principles of Corporate Social Responsibility at every level in the company; and making sustainability an integral part of every aspect of our planning for the future.
