Project Manager named STEM Ambassador of the Year

Joanne Haskins, project manager in our Birmingham office, was awarded STEM Ambassador of the Year at the 2016 UK STEM Inspiration awards.

The awards took place in the prestigious House of Lords and were presented by Lord Sainsbury of Turnville. Also in attendance was Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities and Science, and Justine Greening, Secretary of State for Education

The STEM Inspiration Awards recognise the work done by a wide range of people and organisations, to enrich the experience of young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects, and to promote the STEM agenda.

The awards celebrate significant voluntary contributions as a STEM Ambassador – individuals who give their time, expertise and energy free of charge to work with schools, colleges and other groups working with young people, to inspire them in STEM.

Joanne said: “It’s amazing how one conversation or one assembly can make a life changing impact to a student’s life and that gives me great enjoyment. Our industry is about making a difference to people, and being a STEM ambassador is just another way to do this.”

Graeme Braithwaite, Infrastructure Director in project management, said: “There is much discussion about the challenges that our industry faces in attracting future generations to pursue a career in construction, engineering, technology and the sciences. This makes us even more proud of the programme that Joanne and the STEM initiative deliver. The energy and dedication that Joanne has shown is a real inspiration to us all, not only in her engagement with young people but also her success at attracting new Ambassadors to this worthwhile agenda.”

Molly McKenzie, Regional Director ICE West Midlands congratulated Joanne and said: “She is always looking for new ways of telling people how amazing her job is and inspiring children and young adults into the profession.”

In the UK Turner & Townsend has a network of STEM Ambassadors and Career Ready mentors in addition to partnering with primary and secondary schools in our local communities through our UK Schools Programme and Design Engineer Construct curriculum.
