Playing a key role in £485m 3Ts hospital redevelopment for the UK south east
We have helped the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust prepare and win approval for the £485m 3Ts redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital – one of the largest treasury-funded NHS projects in recent years.
We have managed the contract and commercial negotiations on the project alongside the main contractor Laing O’Rourke. We have also been project manager, cost manager and CDM-advisor on rehousing medical facilities while the redevelopment works take place.
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, which started drawing up its outline business case in 2008, was given formal approval by HM Treasury and Department of Health for the 3Ts Redevelopment of the hospital in October last year.
The 3Ts Redevelopment is being carried out in three stages so that all the hospital’s clinical services can remain open and onsite throughout the programme. It will replace all the buildings on the front half of the hospital site, including the Barry Building which opened in 1828 - some 20 years before Florence Nightingale started nursing.
Work on the infrastructure for the Stage 1 Building and the new helideck on top of the existing Thomas Kemp Tower has started this month (January). The redevelopment will benefit a wide range of patients including those using cancer, elderly care, intensive care, general medicine, neuroscience and stroke services, amongst others.
Crucial to success of the redevelopment will be the methodologies and approaches ourselves and Laing O’Rourke will be taking to minimise possible disruption from environmental issues (including noise, dust and pollution) for patients, visitors, staff and local residents.
We were chosen because of our proven experience, expertise and capabilities in project and cost management on healthcare schemes.
