Delivering Microsoft’s smart office in Luxembourg

  • We have provided project and cost management services over 12 months

  • High-tech fit out of office in Luxembourg based on internet of things through connected devices and multiple sensors to monitor working environment

  • Turner & Townsend has now completed 54 projects worldwide for Microsoft

We have led the digital transformation of Microsoft's office in Luxembourg as part of the tech giant's first phase to improve its employees' working environment using the internet of things.

We provided project and cost management services including the procurement of the main contractor, other consultants and Microsoft direct appointments.

The office, which has five-metre–high ceilings and glass walls, has been fitted out with smart technology using connected devices and multiple sensors to monitor CO2, lighting, noise and temperature. Data is available in real-time so staff can instantly see the impact of their behaviour on the environment and be encouraged to adopt sustainable habits.

The primary aim of the high-tech fit out project was to consolidate the office for Microsoft's Global Sales, Marketing and Operations (GSMO) and Skype businesses in its current location in Luxembourg City. Instead of occupying two floors, Microsoft has decided to enhance the space on one floor for both employees and customers.

Turner & Townsend is part of a global framework to provide project and cost management services for Microsoft, and since 2006 has completed 54 projects worldwide for the tech giant.

Luke Bartolo, Director for Turner & Townsend, said: "We have been working hand in glove with Microsoft for a decade now, with the key to success mainly down to proactive management, robust cost control and hands-on design management.

"This allowed our hugely experienced team in Luxembourg to minimise changes to ensure delivery on time and under budget. The final fit-out has provided Microsoft with a unique workplace for its employees."

Candi Carrera, Country Manager for Microsoft, added: "The partnership with Turner & Townsend was instrumental in the success of this real estate project and more specifically the drive, passion, energy and expertise of the consultancy's project manager proved invaluable.

"We wanted to create the best place to work for our employees and guarantee their well-being. This is the first phase in the company’s campaign to improve its working environment through the internet of things. Ultimately, Microsoft wants to inspire others with this project to initiate their own digital transformations."
