HS2 event

Unlocking Britain’s economic potential.

Business representatives, members of parliament and local government attended an event hosted in our London office on 4 November to discuss how regions can work together to maximise the benefits of the proposed High Speed 2 (HS2) line. The discussion covered the impact on jobs and skills, trade and business growth and town centre regeneration. Participants also emphasised the value of spreading the benefits of HS2 by integrating into the existing rail and wider transport network.

HS2 is a planned high-speed railway in the United Kingdom linking London, Birmingham, the East Midlands, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester.

Speaking at the event was Lilian Greenwood - Labour MP for Nottingham South, Chris Hobson – Director of Policy at East Midlands Chamber, Cllr Joyce McCarty – Deputy Leader of Newcastle City Council and Cllr Russell Imrie – of Midlothian Council.

Speeches were followed by a ‘Voice of Business’ discussion with a panel including Andrew Carter – Deputy Chief Executive at Centre for Cities, Maria Machancoses – Programme Director and Midlands Connect, Patricia Moore, Managing Director – Turner & Townsend, Jonathan Spruce – Director of Strategic Transport at Tees Valley Combined Authority and Lillian Greenwood.

Lillian Greenwood  commented "It is about improving our connectivity and opening up opportunities for employment, growth and potentially millions of pounds, about making sure the voices of the East Midlands are heard loud and clear.”

Patricia Moore, Managing Director Infrastructure UK, commented: “Turner & Townsend is a global business with a Leeds HQ and a presence across the regions and, consequently, we understand the benefits HS2 Eastern Leg will bring.

“It responds to the changing needs of business and rail passengers, providing 21st Century connectivity. It will be a game-changer for Britain, allowing growth from investment to fuel our economies and drive business forward.

The event was also an opportunity for our graduates to listen to MPs and take part in a discussion on the transformational impact strategic investment in infrastructure can have on people, societies and business.
