Project of the Year- Narec, Judges' Supreme Award - Narec, Construction Consultancy of the Year (Highly Commended)
Narec, the National Renewable Energy Centre, which we helped bring to life, has picked up both the Project of the Year (£10m - £50m) and Judges’ Supreme Award at the 2013 Construction News Awards. We were highly commended in the Construction Consultancy of the Year category.
A highly complex and technically challenging set of projects, Narec saw our North East offices deliver a turnkey consulting service to this highly prestigious project. Narec is based in Blyth, Northumberland and is the UK’s national research centre for advancing the development and deployment of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy generation technologies and will play a pivotal role in securing offshore wind inward investment within the UK.
The project involved the construction of three test facilities comprising a new Blade Test Facility capable of dynamic and static testing of blades up to 100m, a new drive train testing facility called Nautilus for the independent testing of wind and tidal turbines which was built in and over an existing dock and the world’s largest offshore wind turbine drive train test facility named Fujin with a test rig capable of providing testing the largest offshore turbines upto 10MW. The award follows success at The Constructing Excellence in the North East Awards, where Narec also picked up Project of the Year.
Rebecca Evans, Editor, Construction News said: "The winners of the Construction News Awards 2013 represent the very best of an innovative, dynamic industry that builds everything from breathtaking towers that change the skyline, to schools hospitals and roads that change people's lives. These companies are leading the way in adopting a more sustainable, collaborative and responsible approach to construction, with exciting technology at its core."
John Laverick, Turner & Townsend project Director, said: “It’s great to see Narec recognised at the CN Awards, and especially to see this unique project pick up the Judges’ Supreme Award, which recognises the best of the best in UK projects over the year. The success is a tribute to our highly dedicated project and cost management and health & safety staff under the management of Jonathan Lunn and the skill and expertise of our engineering and design partners.”
