Equality & Diversity Impact Assessment

Equality Drivers in the Public Sector

There are more than 100 pieces of equality legislation and various voluntary codes currently in place to prevent discrimination. An all encompassing Equality Act is planned for 2010.

Public sector organisations are expected, and in some cases required, to lead by example to prevent discrimination at work, in education, in the provision of public services, in the management of premises and in projects.

Most public organisations have implemented policies and processes for equality and diversity management.  However, changed or changing circumstances can detrimentally impact on such policies and processes if not properly considered and addressed.

Equality & Diversity Impact Assessment (EDIA)

An EDIA is a structured, independent process to allow organisations to:

  • Verify that existing policies and processes are effective
  • Benchmark the organisation
  • Determine the likely consequences of a proposed initiative, project or change

Thus, allowing negative consequences to be eliminated or minimised and opportunities for further developing equality and reducing discrimination to be maximised.
