Celebrating Iconic New Art Gallery
Date: 23 February 2010
Today, Turner & Townsend is celebrating the completion of the construction of The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire’s major new art gallery at an event to showcase this inspirational public asset.
When it opens in 2011, the gallery will be one of the largest in the UK and will offer a wide range of cultural, social, educational and economic benefits to the people of Wakefield and the Yorkshire region.
The gallery will significantly increase opportunities for Yorkshire audiences to experience world-class art and it is anticipated that the gallery will attract at least 180,000 visitors in its first year.
The Hepworth Wakefield will enhance Yorkshire’s reputation as a leading destination for sculpture lovers with the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield.
From the project’s inception in 2004, Turner & Townsend has played a pivotal role in helping Wakefield Metropolitan District Council achieve its ambitions for the gallery by providing project and cost management services working alongside signature architect David Chipperfield.
Turner & Townsend is continuing to support the project as it reaches its final phase; the fit-out of the gallery spaces.
Michael Lumb, Turner & Townsend Director said that:
"Turner & Townsend is proud to have been involved in the inspirational Hepworth project from the outset. The new gallery brings real community, educational and regeneration benefits to Wakefield and we are looking forward to working on the final phase of this project. Once open to the public, the Hepworth will be a fantastic asset to the city and will attract a wide range of audiences."
