Building management systems


Historically, building management systems (BMS) controlled only the building environmental controls or heating, ventilation and air conditioning system on an analogue network. In recent years there has been a shift towards providing digital solutions, and as such the BMS market has started moving into Internet Protocol (IP) based solutions. The advantage of this approach has been the ability to interface with other building systems such as CCTV and access control. Gartner, a market research company, has predicted by 2015 70% of BMS systems will be delivered over IP.

The intelligent building will play a more dominant role in building design in the future. The problem at the moment is that mechanical and electrical consultants follow a very traditional delivery model, often designing solutions that are risk averse, with a proven track record. The result is often an approach where building systems and technology systems are delivered as individual packages with very little thought put into what could be achieved by integrating elements.
