Contracts have been signed at City Hall for the landscaping of Kilbarry Nature Park. As part of an overall investment of €1.2 million, this landscape contract will transform the landfill into a local and regional public amenity.

Situated to the south of Waterford city in Kilbarry, the landfill covers an area of approximately 20 hectares. The site is large enough to provide a 2.4 kilometre network of running paths, exercise stations, play areas, wildflower meadows and a woodland planting scheme. With an ecological focus the park will provide an aesthetically pleasing and stimulating environment for the city.  The work will take place at the site in the coming months to ensure that the park is completed in autumn 2011.

Kilbarry Landfill closed in August 2005 and under conditions of its licence a remediation and aftercare plan was instigated.  This involved sealing off the waste from the surrounding environment by installing a plastic layer and subsoil on top of the landfill.  More recently, works have been completed on the surface water management system, new entrance, car park and associated bridges to enable work to begin on the park itself.

The design work on the project was completed by Landscape Architects Mitchell & Associates, Cost Managers Healy Kelly Turner & Townsend, Engineers ARUP and Environmental Consultants Crestwood Environmental Ltd.  Following a procurement process, Grangemore Landscapes Ltd have been appointed as contractor.

Greta English, Associate Director of Healy Kelly Turner & Townsend commented, “We have worked closely with the design team and Waterford City Council to bring a contractor on board for the Kilbarry Nature Park.  Over the coming months our focus will turn to bringing the project to completion and delivering this community facility.”
